Conscious Style

USAC follows the Conscious Style Guide which ensures we are inclusive of all users.

Age

Instead of the word "elderly," use "older person" or "senior."

The public

Some government programs related to Lifeline include individuals with a range of immigration and visa statuses, so avoid using "citizens," "Americans," and "the American public," to describe everyone who lives in the United States.

When referring to a group of people, use an appropriate term such as "applicants," "users," and "service providers." Alternatively, describe the people as specifically as possible.

For example, instead of "Universal service programs ensure Americans have access," use:

  • Universal service programs ensure the public have access
  • Universal service programs ensure people who live in the United States have access

Pronouns

Avoid using "he/him/his" and "she/her/hers" if you are unsure of someone's preferred pronouns. Instead, use "they/them/theirs."
